Factors to consider while buying winter clothing for your dog.
Winter can be harsh in North India and a lot of other locations specially Dec-Feb every year.
Your dog’s breed, size and age are some of the things to take into consideration while deciding on what winter clothing to buy for your dog.
Age
In particular, puppies and senior dogs may feel the change in weather much more than adult/young dogs. Puppies are not fully developed so must be protected against weather change as the immunity remains low. Senior dogs on the other hand, tend to lose body fat as they age. In both cases, these dogs are more exposed to a dip in the temperature.
Breed
Double coat dogs like German Shepherds, Huskies etc can adapt well to colder temperatures. However, breeds with short coat or size like Pugs, Beagles, Terriers, Dachshunds and alike can feel cold and must be protected while outdoors.
Irrespective of the style of winter wear for dogs you choose, don’t forget to remove all clothing during the day to allow the coat to breathe. Brush your dog daily to avoid knots or matting as is commonly seen with winter clothing.
Type
Dog sweatshirts and dog sweaters are comfortable to wear during the day, to laze around and walk. Dog Jackets are recommended for outdoors. Some dogs depending on the coat type and location may need a double layer.
Getting the size right
A sweatshirt/sweater or dog coat should cover the length of your dog’s back, from the base of their neck to the start of their tail. The coat should be snug enough around your dog’s neck to keep the warmth in but not too tight as to cause discomfort. Refer to our size guide on the product page to know your dog’s correct size.
It’s important to measure your dog correctly to get the correct fit. Make sure that your dog is standing while you measure, using a soft measuring tape.
All of our coats have adjustable chest and neck opening to ensure they are easy to put on and comfortable for your dog. Our dog sweatshirts and sweaters are stretchable and easy to pull down from the head.
Fabric type
Choose a breathable cotton fabric while buying any kind of dog clothes. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen allow the coat to breathe and reduce chances of overheating as caused by polyester fabrics.
